MIA’S HAND THROBBED PAINFULLY, but it was nothing compared to the pain visible on the faces of the two brothers. She felt for them, even Miles, as much as she distrusted him.

“It’s my bag,” Miles said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mia glanced at the officer’s badge and asked, “Is something wrong, Officer Maxwell?”

The young woman walked to the table, laid the knapsack on it and reached into one of the small side pockets. She removed something and placed it beside Miles’s belongings. It was a small black-and-silver disk, just slightly larger than a quarter.

“An AirTag?” she whispered in surprise.

“That’s not mine,” Miles immediately said, shock obvious on his features.

“It’s small enough and light enough to slip in without anyone noticing,” John said, offering his brother an out.

Way too easy to do, Mia thought. “Aren’t there safeguards—”

“He’s using an Android phone and watch. They won’t pick up that he’s being tracked. If the service provider sees anything funky going on, they’ll disable it,” John explained.

“But not for a couple of days, right?” Trey asked.

“Three, I believe,” John said.

“That means we have three days to use it to find whoever planted it,” Mia said.
